We just purchased a new sportsmen classic 19SBT and love it.

2011 Sportsmen Classic 19 SBT. 2011 Ram 1500. Yes it has the hemi, no more towing issues for us. I wonder if Lewis and Clark had a Sportsmen classic and what they towed with.

We have already tested the new trailer. It was very cold last week in southern Ontario but the furnace saved us. We stayed at the Pinery Provincial Park.

Welcome to the forum.  Fortunately, I live where we don't really need the furnace.  Now the A/C is a whole other matter!

Welcome from another Southern Ontario member. I'm from Niagara Falls and will be picking up my trailer tomorrow. Been waiting since last fall and can't wait to put her through the paces.

I'm curious … I gather that you used the propane furnace. How long did you use it and do you have any idea how much propane you used??

I'm hoping to use my trailer the next few weeks on several shakedown trips but with the weather we're getting it will likely be some chilly evening/nights.

Regards

Karsty

Karsty,

I was very curious about how much propane we were going to use so we filled our tank before we went and as soon as we got back.

We used 9 lbs. of the 20 lbs. tank.

-Two nights camping 40 degrees outside and 70 degrees in the camper running the furnace.
-Two meals cooked using the bbq connected to the trailer propane tank.
-Four hours operating the fridge on propane.
-Approx. two hours operating the cook top to prepare meals and boil water.

One of the campers we met at the campground said they use electric heaters to save on propane since they are paying for the electricity anyways.
I am concerned with the safety of electric heaters. Does anyone have any  suggestions as to a good electric heater???

I am considering adding another propane tank to the trailer to avoid being caught on a cold night without heat…

PS Hope all went well picking up your new trailer.

We used a small 1500 W ceramic heater all winter.  And we have 2 dogs.  We usually tucked the heater under the edge of the dinette bed.  And with that, we had to work really hard to keep it from getting too hot at night in the trailer.

We did take the precautions to make sure the blankets didn't hang over the edge of the bed and kept it where the dogs couldn't easily knock the heater over.

Hi Dave:

Thanks so much for the information/report on your trailer. I actually sleep in mine last night … mind you I was in the driveway. LOL

The furnace definitely was needed and it works well. I was actually surprised at how well it worked. A bit noisy but lots of heat. To conserve propane I did use a small heater for the night.

I will start looking at everything today and hopefully have it all figured out before I head out on my first shakedown trip.

Happy & safe travels.

Hi Dave & Julie:

Dave … I was using one of those radiant dish heaters from Costco last night. I will NOT be using that large of a heater when I travel. I'll look for something like Julie mentioned. Small ceramic with a safety tip over feature and a thermostat.

Julie … can't speak to the kind of furnaces you might have had available … but the one in mine is really efficient.  16000 BTW. It has the auto ignition so no pilot light to fiddle with. Controlled with a thermostat on the wall near the bathroom. It really heats up the trailer!!

It was definitely cool here last night. Got to around 28F. I didn't really have the bed made up properly so I was a little uncomfortable.  I'll remedy that tonight. :)

Fortunately no ice as depicted in your picture.
