Apparently, I'm having issues with lighting the hot water heater pilot. I did it last year but don't understand what I'm missing now. What I do is open the propane tank. Then, I turn the knob for the water heater to pilot, put a flame near the pilot tube, press down on the knob. I expect a flame, but nothing happens.
Any suggestions of what I might be missing in this process?

just guessing but you probably got some air in the line that needs to purge before propane can flow. or all the propane leaked from the tank over the winter and you are empty. i would first try lighting the stove top, this would purge the air the quickest if that's the issue. if that lights then i would try the water heater again keeping in mind that there still may be air trapped in the system so you may have to try several times before the gas displaces air in the pilot. be overly cautious messing with gas, the life you save could be your own.

Thanks for the advice and sorry about the double post…computer glitch. : / .
I kinda thought it might be trapped air in the tube after watching a youtube of the same situtation. I will try again, over and over, (with caution) to purge the air out.

Well, called my service guy at the dealership and he said to push down on the pilot knob for a full 2 minutes to purge the air, then put the flame to the tube, which I did and the flame came on. All is well for hot water now.

Yeah, I always have to hold that knob down for a good 15-30 seconds before it will finally send gas through and make a flame. I also continue to hold the knob down for a minute afterward (the tech said I should do that to ensure it does not go out)… one time I only held it down for 20 seconds afterward, and in a minute or so it went back out on me.

The reasonyou have to hold down the pilot knob after lighting the pilot is so that you heat up the thermocouple enough to produce a few millivolts of electricity to energize the magnet in the water heater control. —- gas fitter and gas seviceman for 35 years—retired!!!

Thanks, good to know about that thermocouple. I wondered.
A thermocouple, that's when two teenagers get "hot and bothered" and… never mind! 
Ya know, the last time I tried to light a pilot, he threatened to not fly the plane… Ok, I'm leaving now!
