Sounds like a great trip! I've only been to PaloDuro one night and we had fog the next morning so missed the great views. I'm thinking about doing Crater of the Diamonds this summer but I don't think we will camp as we will have my mother – too many people for my little trailer.
And I'm impressed with your mileage. My older F150 with the same engine won't get anywhere as good as you described.

Am I understanding you correctly, that your old truck got considerably better fuel economy (20 mpg vs 14-15) than your new one? Which engines in each? I'm curious. And also puzzled that you would say the old one "only" got 20, because I'd love to get such mileage when towing.

hey, speaking of kayaks. this was then:
this is now
(forgive me if this is scrambled up, it is my first attempt at inserting pictures)
do you plan on carrying your boats with you, and how? it seems like i should be able to do this, but i don't really want to invest a lot of money in thule rack, and i probably don't want to build my own since i am from Tennessee and all. (Beverly hillbillies come to mind)

thanks Jullie, I have seen a few of these solutions. you were draw to the problem, the truck cover. it is awful handy to cover up chairs, the rug and coolers. i would hate to give that up. we are going to see if we can put them inside the camper this morning but my thought is that it will be more trouble than its worth. i am leaning towards some sort of ladder rack type deal that i can put on and take off, which would have been easy if dodge had not omitted the bed stakes on the truck. oh well, if it were easy….

Julie, too bad you didn't get a chance to stop at Petit Jean State Park in Ark. It's nice.
Speaking of kayaks… I'm starting to have thoughts about a Hobie Mirage. Any of you tried a pedal powered kayak before? If so, what did you think of it?

Julie – I would be interested to hear what folding kayak you have? I take it you have been very happy with it.

I have a hobie mirage outback and love it. Very stable, comfortable and great for fishing. Really nice to be able to switch to just pedaling if your arms are giving out due to wind or waves. Also very easy to really use both paddling and pedals together for more power. When you are just on pedal power you can troll along with your hands free. simple pressure movement on the rudder with one hand, switches direction quickly. I have found the only drawback is its a bit heavy, but still doable.
Mine is for sale if you are interested.
