Trip Report
The first night was spent at Tishomingo State Park in Mississippi, off the Natchez Trace . This is a little park, nice but not much going on. Most of the camp sites back up to a small man made lake. This was my first time driving on the Natchez trace and I was quite impressed. I will be back. Average gas mileage this day was 13.9 mpg.
The next two nights were spent behind the Hollywood casino Tunica Mississippi in their rv park. $20 a night with cable, sewer and a short walk to three different casinos. As usual, we were the smallest camper onsite but this time it was by far. Still, we felt very safe and accepted. Terrible head winds and rollercoaster road led to 12.3 mpg average on that tank
We left the camper there the next day for a day trip to Hot springs Arkansas where we spent a nice day, ate dinner then went to little rock on a wine run.( long story involving wine made in Altus Arkansas that we love that somehow one walmart in little rock seems to carry at a discount). we got back to tunica late, stayed in the casino even later so we slept in the next day. Tank average was 17.6 mpg.
When we finally got up the next day, we started back but not before visiting the area a little more. We intended to spend our last night at the Joe Wheeler State Park in Alabama and we did however we did not get there till dark. The ranger there was extremely nice and helpful and we found a site in the dark, built a fire, sampled some Arkansas concord before settling in. The next morning however was well…. Technicolor hell, and unbearable! The first hint was seeing small children on bicycles riding by our windows on all sides, then seeing said children occupying our picnic table and one of our anti-gravity chairs lying in the fire ring and the other folded up and moved. It would seem that we were camping right in the middle of their bmx course and they were oblivious to the fact it was our site. They yelled, screamed, hit empty water bottles with sticks, you get the picture! We tried to reclaim our site, but they just keep coming. Parents were around and witnessing, the camp host was two sites over; no one did squat or seemed to care. We left there after coffee without exploring anything and don’t plan to go back. I plan to complain on a gubernatorial level since the camp host was oblivious and there were no ranger patrols. We paid more for that site than any other that week by the way. We went to Huntsville got some nice stuff to decorate the camper at the old town pottery store, had lunch and headed home.
That tank averaged 12.3 mpg. Again the rolling hills took their toll. Over all, a great fall excursion, our longest trip to date with the sportsmen ( about 1000 miles including the camper less trip to hot springs) we learned a lot, (like stay out of state parks on the weekend!) and feel good about planning a trip to Ichetucknee Springs Florida in the spring (sues birthday favorite river) if we can find a way around Atlanta Georgia.
