Has anyone had occasion to temporarily remove the jack on the trailer tongue?
I was thinking to do so, as the jack hit quite hard on the approach ramp of a ferry we took recently. As we are planning a trip on that same ferry we were thinking of removing the jack before loading on the ferry. Second choice is taking a ferry closer to high tide. ( We are on the Bay of Fundy: tidal range is around 35 feet).
I've been told it is a simple matter (once you are hitched up) of removing the three bolts, then the top and bottom of the hitch will just come off. Has anyone tried this?
The foot of my jack normally rides about 4 5/8″ from the ground. Are other folks getting a similar clearance? My jack bottoms out quite often, on driveways, a dip in the apron at the local gas station, etc. The draw bar installed by the dealer has the trailer coach clearance, at the front: 13.5″; at the back: 15.5″. I am wondering if a different draw bar balancing the two clearances might be a good idea. I generally don't have an issue with the back end of the trailer dragging on things, just the jack.

never done it on one of these trailers, but as long as you tighten the bolts well when you but it back it shouldnt be an issue,,
the Protect a hitch caster may solve your problem as well

Well, I hitched up last night and removed the Jack, just to see how easy it really is….and it is easy! I just removed the three bolts at the base of the jack (where it meets the tongue), removed the foot plate, and then it just lifts off.
Kayaknut, could you send me a picture of your truck hitch? As I mentioned, I'm thinking my drawbar is less than ideal.
Thanks for the comments!

How about a side mounted swing up jack, similar to that used on pop ups? That might be easier than bolting and unbolting, especially in the rain, at night, etc.
