Update:
Took the RAV to a local transmission shop and asked their opinion. They were very willing to put in a transmission cooler for me, and had it done in about a day. Total cost: $165. Initial estimate from the local Toyota dealer: at least $600 . Pretty cheap insurance for a prolonged transmission and transmission fluid, I think. Pic of the cooler box is here if you're interested. I can't get a good pic of the cooler installed…just looks like the grill of a car
Happy camping!
Sounds like the Toyota dealer is really out to make a fast buck…..the hell with the customer.

Look at this <a target="_blank" href="http://www.niehoff.com/techtips/trans.html/" >Chart</a> <- How do you link?
Now, if your radiator's thermostat is 195 degrees, you will never be able to deliver 175 degree oil to the transmission unless you have a cooler. The cooler must be installed in the flow from the radiator back to the tranny.
I learned about this last year and then installed a Tru-Cool for $200 total.

John-
Thanks for the info. Other than assuming (hoping?) the transmission place knew what they were talking about, I'm really not sure how to tell. I unfortunately know more about computers more than mechanics. By the way, the way to "link": Highlight the word in your message from which you'd like to link, click on the button (on the forum tools above the message you're writing) that looks like a link of three chains, then paste in the http:// address you'd like to link to in the "Link URL" spot. The "Title" portion below the web address is optional. Hope that helps. And thanks for the info on the plumbing of the cooler. I'll stop by the shop sometime to have them confirm.

I too am taking the plunge and getting a tranny cooler installed this thursday. Just want the extra protection of my transmission and not take any chances. Hopefully in another yr to year and a half, can move up to a larger, beefier TV. The local garage says it will be probably just over $200.

I had great news when I took my car in last Thursday. Apparently, my 2007 Mitsuibishi Outlander already had a quite large transmission oil cooler already there as part of the standard equipment. So there was no need to install a new one. The mechanic told me it was actually larger than the after market one, he was looking at installing.
