Congratulations!  You might consider a Friction Sway Control like this one from Reese.  I have found it makes a big difference for me when towing in Windy conditions.  The dealer put mine on but there's not much to installing it other than drilling the frame for the ball plate.   Well worth the $50.  I use it without weight distribution.

I thinking of friction sway control too. I just got back from Inks Lake State Park (Burnet, TX), and between there and home (Spring, TX), it was quite windy and the rig was definitely feeling it. When it wasn't windy, I did not experience any sway problems.

I am running without a WD hitch, and I'm wondering if that would cut down on the bouncing when hitting a bump or dip. My axle is not flipped so I'm concerned about scrapes to the bumper or the hitch stand. Otherwise, I'm feeling more and more comfortable towing the trailer!

do the friction sway control, have a good brake controller and keep your hand near the controller when it gets windy ( a little tap will straighten it right up) and let Dakotas do what Dakotas do. (make guys in bigger trucks rethink their decisions)

Congrats on the 19BH. When I bought mine in 2010, the dealer swore up and down I would need a Weight Distribution Hitch with a Anti-Sway Control. This was on my 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Extended Cab Truck. I told them I would consider it, hooked up to the truck with the 2″ ball, and off I went. The only thing the trailer did was got a little squirrelly at 80MPH on the ride home on Route 2, felt it start acting funny at 75MPH. No I am not endorsing running small trailers at high speed, but I really wanted to see if I really needed the extras.

Several trips, thousands of miles, 3 different trucks ('02 GMC Sierra 1500 V6 2WD 8'Bed,'05 Silverado Ext Cab V8 4WD 6'6″bed,'11 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE Z71 V8 4WD Ext Cab 6'6″ Bed), and I still just run a 2″ ball and brake controller. Biggest thing is watch how you load the trailer, and how you load your truck. Personally I think your Dakota will do just fine, just remember if caught in a crosswind, slow down, don't make quick side to side manuevers, and you'll be fine.

Hey Doug……any tips or advice on adjusting the sway bar, or getting it set for first time usage?  I installed mine and will be using it for the first time this week.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Hey Matt- one thing I've been reading is that most trailer tires are only rated to 65 mph.  I will occasionally get above 65 but find that handling and mpg is much better when I stick to 65 or lower.  With the winds we have been having this spring (does anyone else think it's windier than normal?), I've been having more issues with movement on the road but not actual sway.

Hi Carol – The dealer adjusted mine but basically there is a bolt on the bottom for adjusting the tension and a handle on the top for turning it on and off.  When the handle is in the off position I can move the bar in and out by hand.  When the handle is in the on position I can't.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I purchaced a sweet friction control bar off from ebay with a set of 5000lbs front scissor jacks. Had the dealership install everything. Im also considering trading the Dakota in for a new Chevy Silverado sometime in July.

Sandersmr:  Had my new buggie out camping this past weekend.  Got killed by the winds on the way to the CG and then again on Monday.  Winds out of the W-NW and I was traveling on the highway north (so basically into it and crosswind).  I am guessing blowing somewhere between 22-30.  Dropped the speed down to 55-60 and still only got 7.5mpg!!!!Yell  Needless to say I spent lots of $$$$ on gas this past weekend. Cry  (and the campground was only an hour and 15 min away)

Guess I will be breaking the piggy bank in June for my week long trip to Mackinaw and the UP.

Carol – I have been attacked by the wind in the pocket book as well.  It's been unusually windy around here all spring.

Unfortunately, I haven't been out since my long trip last month – between finishing a term in school and our a/c upgrade – no time and the trailer is somewhat torn up.  But both are beginning to wrap up and I have reservations Memorial Day weekend.  I just hope the wind dies down by then.

Certainly has been more windy this Spring so far here on the Minnesota prairie.  Our TT is still in Winter storage at the county fairgrounds……the grounds still being too wet to remove it from the storage building, I'm told…..water table way above normal.Frown

Hope to get TT out of storage this week and get it ready for this Spring's Samboree (Good Sam Club) in Owatonna, MN starting on the 19th.  If everything goes right, Donna and I are supposed to meet up with flygal and her significant other at the rally.
