We have a new 2010 Sportsmen Classic 14 RB. We're towing with a Dodge Durango and are happy with how it tows. But considering a weight distribution hitch. Is it necessary? This is our first trailer.

I will be planning to tow our Classic RB with a 6cyl Mitzsuibishi Outlander. It has a 3500lb towing capacity if trailer brakes are used.

I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Limited. In line 6 cyl. 190 Hp. Equipped with trailer towing package, tow brakes and transmission cooler. We went to our dealer today and towed the bunk house model for 75 miles. Interstate, back roads, hills, etc. Not towing 19.3 mpg. Towing 12.7 mpg. Performance was just fine. I towed it mostly at 60 mph, but in actuality when I slowed down to 55 mph, I was much happier and fuel comsumption was better. We are retired and really shouldn't be in such a hurry anyway .
We made the decision to purchase. Our plan is for a may delivery. With a 6 month warranty, I don't want my warranty to expire while I do very limited use over the winter. We are very pleased with the product and comfortable with our decision.

Regarding weight distribution hitch and anti sway equipment. The dealer in Tennessee that we are using and have much respect for reccommends that we use both. We are going to take his reccommendation.

1984 GMC High Sierra 1500 p/u. Restored and 98.000 original miles. 305 v8, trailer package, elec. brakes. Have neither equilizer bars nor sway bars. Towed total of over 1.000 miles in extremly tight mountain roads as well as 75mph Interstate. Never had the slightest problem with wind, tracking-anything. Not recommending not needeng these–just that I nave not experienced the need, myself.

Scroller:
I wholeheartedly agree with your post. Our dealer also thinks that the WDH is something that he personalizes for each towing situation. When Carol and I arrived back from our trial run, we both noticed that the back of my jeep and the front of the RV were slightly dipping in the middle. Also, I had mentioned to him that when the 18 wheelers passed me, I sort of felt it. We had absolutely no sway with the trailer. I guess I am just being extremely careful. We are leaving Tennessee next spring to Seattle on a 6,000 miler and I just don't want to take any unnecessary chances regarding safety issues. .
I love this forum and I sure hope more folks start using it. Who knows, in the next year or two, we just might be having rallys.

You shouldn't have a problem. We are towing with a Sienna minivan with towing capacity of 3500 lbs and we pulled ours from Manchester TN to Bham AL with no problems. We even towed on I24 which has a stretch that has a 6% grade and is really winding….no problems whatsoever.

Brought the Classic home Saturday! No problem towing with the Rav4 even in the rain. Had to remember it was behind me. First shake down trip planned next week-end to Lake Okeechobee.

I tow the 14RB with a '04 Toyota Tacoma 2.7L 4 cylinder automatic. Added a couple of rear 'add-a-leaf' to my springs. Rear of truck barely moves when hitched up now. Put in a K & N air filter. That gave me some more power. Changed the oil to synthetic Mobil 1 and down the road we go! Last calculation we got 15MPG. 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 2WD Regular Cab 8 foot bed V6 Automatic or 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD Extended Cab 6'6″ bed V8 Automatic.
Biggest thing is both trucks each weigh more than the trailer does.
Now I am waiting for the maiden voyage from the dealership, probably pick my 19BH up with the Silverado, as I have a 10:30AM walk through on the 21st, and a 1 1/2hour drive back to my father's place, plus a 25 minute ride from his place to work, and I have to be at work for 3 PM, so I can leave it hooked up to the Silverado at his place until the weekend.

We're on vacation with our 14RK. First trip. Went from Grand Rapids MI to Savannah GA–1200 miles. We pull it with our '02 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 6 cylinder with 125,000 miles on it. Did well. Through the mountains and everything. We're pleased. Our 14RK has the upgraded package–two-way frig, gas stove, microwave, etc. The frig is not staying lit while traveling–only problem we've had.

hello all,
new guy here. i just came back from crestview rv out here in austing (buda),tx and we fell in love with the 19BH. originally we had thought of a pop up camber but when the dealer showed us the kz sportsmen classic and it's dry weight i was blown away. i totally got excited and proceed to do a search and found this cool site. btw, they quoted us for 1$0,995 which was 'sale price'.
what i would like to know is if the honda odessey '03 minivan would be ok to tow this thing with? i read someone posting that they pulled with their sienna minivan just fine. what i'm wondering is when they mention 3500 lb max weight, are they refering to only the trailer and its' contents or do i have to consider what's being stowed onto my minivan as well? meaning children, their bikes, dog, etc…
thanks all in advance and so happy to find a forum just for the sportsmen

Hey Chooch, Welcome to the forum I pull my 14RK with a 97 nissan 4×4 4 cylinder truck. Its rated 3500 lbs too but I am pretty sure that means TOTAL weight of trailer and contents of TV ( TOW VEHICILE), and I have a hard time towing any grades with my truck empty and trailer just about empty. I made the 6% grade across the mtns from NC to TN but I had to drop down to third gear there for a moment.A 6 cylinder shouldnt have a problem I would imagine. Where I plan to camp isnt very hilly or steep, I know my limitations. One day I hope I can get a 6 cylinder but in the meantime I have to limit where I can camp.
BTW feel free to post pics of your rig , campouts or any mods you have done on our Sportsmen Classic Owners Flicker Group at http://www.flickr.com/people/s…..ic_owners/

Also wanted to mention that we got the weight distribution kit. The Vue was equipped with a "tow package" when we bought it, but we had to upgrade the hitch (which was only class II) to a Class III to accomodate the thing.

teaspoon, thank you very much. sounds like i may have to take it easy on the amount of cargo.
it's a nice timing in that i may have to get a new car (after 12 years) and i'm thinking of getting a tacoma. i know that the v6 version has 6500 lbs of towing capacity but would it be overkill to look into a "towing package"? thanks again all.

Chooch, if they will "throw in" a towing package wouldnt hurt, ha ha…Im not sure what a towing package cosists of actually, you might want to post your question someplace Like http://www.rvnet or one of the other many rv camping websites with many knowledgable and experienced RV'ers. In my case I know I am underpowered, and in truth that is not the safest thing, but thats how Im rolling at the moment, trying to limit my risk as to where I go,how I load ect.For piece of mind re safety and reducing any damage to your TV I would get all the information I could get before making my decision. Good Luck and lets us know what you come up with.

I am towing my 2010 RK with a '01 Toyota Tundra V-8, which does great over mountain passes. I have an issue with the Hijacker ball mount hitch BM307 I'm using that was suggested by the dealer service dept. The hitch has a drop to it that is pretty much level to the RK, only when going down a small dip or over a small speed bump, the jack will scrape the ground and this is without the jack pad installed. So, as a result of the scraping, the jack pad is prevented from installation. I have an appt. to talk to the service dept. this coming Wed. and I would like to have some info as to what would be a better setup for the TT and my truck's towing package.
Thanks, Cheryl
